IoT plays a preeminent role in smart and connected city solutions. As India’s population migrates to urban areas, cities are faced with new challenges. Smart cities describe a platform that integrates multiple information and communication technology (ICT) and Internet of Things (IoT) solutions in a secure fashion to manage a city’s assets. The platform can provide the information and services needed to drive a variety of benefits including cost reduction, green initiatives and citizen engagement. Some of the prevalent smart city components include smart parking, traffic management, optimized mass transit, water monitoring, smart lighting, trash/recycling, air quality monitoring and many more. These components are, in a large part, enabled by a variety of IoT sensors that were previously unavailable.
Government of India has already allocated more than USD 1,2B for Smart Cities in their budget in 2015. India plans 100 new smart cities and will develop existing cities under the smart city program. Also, more than 11 million new homes every year means that will become India the world‘s 3rd largest construction market.
